Harvey Stein is a professional photographer based in New York City. He is currently a teacher at the International Center of Photography, and frequently gives lectures across the United States, as well as internationally. Stein’s photographs have been featured in 79 personal exhibits, along with 140 group exhibits. He has been photographing the streets of Harlem for more than 20 years now. He first began during an African American parade that took place on Malcom X Boulevard. He found that the community was very welcome to his presence, and they were always willing to connect with him. Since then, Stein has continually been photographing the ever-changing city of Harlem and those whom reside there. He recently published Harlem Street Portraits, a collection of photographs Stein has taken on the streets of Harlem from 1990-2012. His intention for publishing this book was express his “admiration and fondness and to document the spirit of the people there.”
